February 6th, 2011  |  Published in Ultimate guide to job interview answers  |  141 Comments

In a difficult job market, you need to prepare yourself as best you can for upcoming interviews. Practice interview questions and answers are a necessity! You could be up against hundreds of other applicants, who have similar, if not better qualifications than you.  Many people spend a great deal of time constructing their cover letter and resume. This of course is time well spent as these are the tools that will get you in for an interview. Some people, however, stop there. It is imperative that you spend time preparing yourself for the interview. The interview is what will decide if you have the job or not!

With that in mind, there are many tools at your disposal to help prepare you for a job interview. There are articles and information online, but what you really need to do is acquire some actual practice interview questions and answers to help prepare you.  The Ultimate Guide to Job Interview Answers is a tool I came across and found to be useful, so I decided to review the product on my site to help others decide if it could help them as well. NOTE: This is just a review of the product, to view the product’s site, click the link. First let me begin by introducing the product itself:

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO JOB INTERVIEW ANSWERS

Interviews are stressful. I have been through so many, and nothing is worse than sitting in front of multiple interviewers for two hours just to never hear from them again. What I specifically liked about this guide was the extensive list of practice questions that were available. Many of which I had been asked before. Here are some examples:

-          Why did you leave your last job?

-          Can you explain this gap in your employment history?

-          Describe a time when you were not very satisfied with your own performance. What did you do?

-          What was your role in your department’s most recent success?

-          What would you consider your strengths and weaknesses?

-          What do you do when people disagree with your ideas?

These are just a few of the questions available. By practicing answering difficult questions such as these, you will present yourself as more confident and therefore a better choice than other candidates also competing for YOUR job.

Beyond supplying practice questions, the guide discusses the meaning behind these questions and ways you can be sure the answer you give will hit on the points the interviewer is looking for. It also provides sample answers for you to use as a base for practice. Interviewers WANT you to ask questions, if you do not ask them questions, they may assume you are not all that interested in working for the company. The guide gives many great example questions that you can use to assure your interviewer you WANT this job. As a side note, be sure to research EVERY company you are interviewing for completely. They will expect you to have an understanding of the company you hope to work for.

We’ve discussed the pros of this guide, but what about the cons? The main problem I noticed is not with the guide itself, but a possible pitfall for the user to avoid. You do not want to simply memorize all the answers in the book. Each interview will be different and you want to practice specific questions and answers for EVERY different interview. Is this a lot of work? YES! Remember that other candidates will be practicing just as hard if not harder, you have to find an edge to get the job you desire and deserve!

Happy Holidays!

Lately I have been asked the question: “What is the point of practicing interview questions if I never get a call back?” How can you have a successful job interview if they never call?  It is a TOUGH job market at the moment, and we have to be on top of our game to get the job we want. So what can you do to make sure you get those call back, and hence be able to demonstrate your fantastic interviewing abilities?

1. Besides job interview preparation you must have a basic resume and cover letter prepared. Take the time to prepare these, look up examples, check and recheck your writing. Have them written and ready to go. Be sure to also keep a reference list prepared.

2. Rewrite your resume and cover letter to be job specific. I redo my cover letter EVERY time I apply for a job. My resume generally stays the same. Give specific about the company and how you heard about the job posting in your cover letter. This is your chance to sell yourself! Click here to get help writing your cover letter.

3. Don’t be afraid to call back and bother them. Ask if they have reviewed your resume, and if you are still being considered for the position. Be persistent!

Keep working hard, you will get that job! Happy hunting, and a Happy New Year!

I thought I was….. Unfortunately I was wrong! What was my specific downfall you ask? Well, not being prepared for interview questions. That is why I wanted to start this website to provide information and practice for others.

Some sample questions:
• Why did you leave your last job?
• Have you ever been fired or forced to resign?
• Why have you had so many jobs in such a short period of time?
• Can you explain this gap in your employment history?
• Exactly why do you want to work here?

• How well do you work with people? Do you prefer working alone or in teams?
• Describe a situation when working with a team produced more successful results than if you had completed the project on your own.
• What do you do when people disagree with your ideas?
• Describe a situation where you found yourself dealing with someone who didn’t like you. What did you do?

I searched the internet for examples of questions I could expect to be asked in my next interview, and I did find a few helpful sites but none that included all I was searching for. I truly was discouraged because I knew that other applicants were DEFINITELY PRACTICING their questions, and I was likely to get turned down again. I was desperate.

I stumbled upon a helpful guide to job interviews. To me, this has been an absolute lifesaver. The product is an electronic download, so it is instantaneously sent to your computer and fairly inexpensive for all you get. It is also completely refundable. Click here to view the product website. All in all I found it helpful, and with all the practice it provided I was able to finally land a job.

I wish you the best of luck in your job hunting!

Is Facebook Costing You Your Job?

August 17th, 2010  |  Published in How is Facebook helping or harming your job interview?  |  220 Comments

Article on job interview preparation for practice interview questions

Ok, here is the scenario: Your boss finds you on Facebook, and requests you as a friend. Do you add them? No one said when you took the job you had to mix your business life with your personal. Right?…. What will happen if you do not add your boss? Hurt feelings at the least, hopefully no retaliation or missed promotions.

Facebook, as well as other social networking sites such as Myspace allow us to connect with other people in a way that we never have been able to in the past. This can be both good and bad of course. Maybe you’ve reconnected with a high school sweetheart, or an old friend. Maybe you missed out on getting hired for a job because a potential employer checked your page and did not like what they saw.

Recently, a friend admitted to me every time he interviews a candidate for a job he checks their Facebook and Myspace pages. He told me he is less likely to hire them if they complain about their current job or boss, if they appear to be into partying heavily, or if there are any unfavorable comments that stick out. Is this fair? Maybe not, but it is a factor and something you might want to consider before you post a recap of last night’s escapades.

That being said, Facebook and other social networking sites can also help you find a job. That’s right, you heard me correct. You can use them for exactly what they were designed for; networking! Check to see if the company you are applying for has a Facebook page, post your qualifications on your page. You might just get lucky!

To get that job you want, or that promotion the best thing to do is practice and prepare. If you are worried about your social networking page being unprofessional change your settings to private and explain to that boss that wants to add you that it is important to you to have your business and personal lives separate.

Good Luck!

Hey everyone!

If you are here you are probably looking for advice on how to answer EVERY question an interviewer could possibly throw at you. If you are not prepared to handle this, you may sit there looking stumped when you come across one of those tough interview questions.

By increasing your confidence, calming your nerves, and practicing on some great interview questions, you will be able to convince the interviewer you are the person they are looking for!

Although it is important to practice on job interview questions an interviewer may ask you, that is not the only ingredient to a successful job interview. You must also be prepared to ask them questions and demonstrate your knowledge of their company. Here are some great examples of questions you may ask your interviewer:

1. What are the day-to-day expectations and responsibilities of the person hired into this position, … and what would make that person a “superstar”?

2. What does your boss expect of you and your team in terms of performance? How could I help you meet those goals?

3. What’s the one thing I could do on the job that would benefit you the most?

4. Have I addressed that 100% to your satisfaction?

5. Does that answer your question about “X”?

6. Does that make sense? Would that be good example?

7. You do think that my experience with that type of situation would be relevant to my work here, don’t you?

8. I think that’s the kind of experience you are looking to bring to your team, isn’t it?

Step by Step Job Interview Preparation

August 12th, 2010  |  Published in Steps to Job Interview Preparation  |  5 Comments

Searching for a job can be stressful, overwhelming and frustrating. The job interview questions can be extremely difficult. It can also be life-changing. Your main concern while preparing for your job interview should be SELLING YOURSELF. This is your chance to convince the interviewers why you are the person they need. So how do you do it??

1. Have Your Resume and Cover Letter Ready To Go – When that perfect job appears on monster, or in the help wanteds you will be able to fine tune what you already have prepared and send it off. The sooner you get these documents where they need to be the sooner you will be called to have that interview scheduled.

2. Do NOT Be Afraid to Call - Haven’t heard from your prospective employer? CALL! Be persistant. Demonstrate to them that you want the job and are willing to go after it.

3. Prepare Prepare Prepare - The interviewers try to give you job interview questions that will force you to think outside the box, discuss your less than ideal character traits, and possibly discuss what you would do in a hypothetically uncomfortable situation. Be READY for these! There are some great practice interview question guides out there. Spend time formulating answers to these questions ahead of time.

4. Dress To Impress – Dress for the job you want. It always pays to look nice; clean, wrinkle free clothes, clean fingernails, neat hair. Do not go into the interview wearing your pajama pants, or tank-top. You will most likely leave without a job.

5. Follow Up – Send a message a few days after your interview to the interviewer thanking them for spending the time to meet with you. It is polite, and may help steer their decision towards you!

Best of luck in your job hunting!
